The Great Western Greenway (42km)

Great Western GreenwayThe Greenway traverses 42km’s around Ireland’s Atlantic coast between Westport town and Achill Island and visits the picturesque villages of Newport and Mulranny (Mallaranny). It passes by some of the West of Ireland’s most dramatic mountains and offers magnificent views of Clew Bay and its many islands.

 

Westport to Newport

Start/Trailhead : In Westport an official access point is located to the right just off the N59 travelling in the direction of Newport approximately 500m from Westport town centre. Follow the directional fingerpost signs on to the Greenway.
In Newport an official access point is located to the left just off the N59 travelling in the direction of Westport located approximately
2km from Newport town.

  • Distance : 11 km
  • Terrain : Greenway off road cycle and walking trail
  • Estimated Time Cycling : 1 to 1.5 Hours
  • Estimated Time Walking : 3 to 3.5 Hours
  • Waymarking : Trail is waymarked using the National Cycle Network symbol and a white directional travel arrow.
  • To Suit : Suitable for people with moderate levels of fitness.
  • Minimum Gear : Helmet, Bike, Mobile Phone, Snacks, Fluid and waterproofs.

Newport to MulrannyGreat Western Greenway3

Start/Trailhead : In Newport an official access point is located to the left just off the N59 travelling to Mulranny (Mallaranny). In Mulranny an official access point is located to the right just off the N59 travelling to Bangor.

  • Distance : 18 km
  • Terrain : Greenway off road cycle and walking trail
  • Estimated Time Cycling : 2 to 2.5 Hours
  • Estimated Time Walking : 5 to 5.5 Hours
  • Ascent : 82m
  • OS Discovery Map : sheet No 30 & 31
  • Waymarking : Trail is waymarked using the National Cycle Network symbol and a white directional travel arrow.
  • To Suit : Suitable for people with moderate levels of fitness.
  • Minimum Gear : Helmet, Bike, Mobile Phone, Snacks, Fluid and waterproof

Mulranny to AchillGreat Western Greenway

Start/Trailhead : In Mulranny (Mallaranny) an official access point is located to the right just off the N59 travelling to Bangor. An access point is also located to the rear of the Mulranny Park Hotel. On Achill Sound an official access point is located at Óstán Oileán Acla / Achill Island Hotel at the gateway to Achill Island, follow finger post signage onto Greenway.

  • Distance : 13 km
  • Terrain : Greenway off road cycle and walking trail
  • Estimated Time Cycling : 1 to 1.5 Hours
  • Estimated Time Walking : 2 to 2.5 Hours
  • Waymarking : Trail is waymarked using the National Cycle Network symbol and a white directional travel arrow.
  • To Suit : Suitable for people with moderate levels of fitness.
  • Minimum Gear : Helmet, Bike, Mobile Phone, Snacks, Fluid and waterproofs.
